Italy Declares It Will Not Join Trump’s Proposed Gaza Peace Council Due to Constitutional Barriers

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on January 24 that the country has no plans to join the “Peace Council,” created for a peaceful settlement in the Gaza Strip under the chairmanship of U.S. President Donald Trump.

The Italian government clarified that constitutional restrictions prevent participation, specifically noting that Article 9 of the Peace Council’s charter conflicts with Article 11 of the Italian Constitution, which guarantees equal membership rights.

Tajani stated that Italy continues to monitor the development of the situation and leaves open the possibility for future cooperation within the framework of the Peace Council if conditions change.

Additionally, on January 24, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced her request to U.S. President Donald Trump to reconsider the format of the Peace Council. She emphasized that Rome is interested in participating but the current structure does not comply with Italian constitutional requirements.

The United States has invited Russia to participate in the new organization, and the Kremlin is carefully studying the proposal.
