President of the Council of the European Union Antonio Costa confirmed that participating EU nations have commenced preparations for a unified countermeasure against the recent tariff actions by U.S. President Donald Trump, which target Western countries including Greenland.
Costa emphasized his role in coordinating a joint European response and stated that the EU will “always defend international law very resolutely.”
The announcement was made during a press conference held on January 17. French President Emmanuel Macron labeled Trump’s decision “unacceptable,” vowing to organize a retaliatory measure through European nations.
Additionally, EU ambassadors were convened for an emergency meeting on January 18, initiated by the Cyprus presidency of the bloc, to address the escalating trade tensions.
