Venezuelan Presidential Commissioner Delcy Rodriguez announced a telephone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump on January 14, during which they discussed “unresolved issues.” In a Telegram message, Rodriguez described the call as “long, productive and polite,” emphasizing it occurred in an atmosphere of mutual respect.
The two leaders also discussed a bilateral work program during their exchange. This communication followed U.S. announcements on January 3 that it had launched a large-scale strike against Venezuela, resulting in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Celia Flores.
On January 4, the Venezuelan Supreme Court recognized Rodriguez as acting president, and she took the oath of office on January 5. By January 7, Rodriguez stated that Venezuela is open to international energy agreements based on respect, expressing readiness to collaborate with nations across the globe including Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe.
