Deadly Storms Claim At Least 56 Lives Across Portugal and United States

At least five individuals have died as a result of Storm Christine in Portugal on Wednesday, January 28. The fatalities were distributed across three municipalities: three in Leiria, one in Vila Franca de Schira, and one in Marinha Grande.

In Leiria, one victim was killed when a metal sheet fell from a photovoltaic plant, another was found under the collapsed roof of a house, and the third died at a construction site where a person’s heart stopped.

Meanwhile, a severe snowstorm across the United States has resulted in 51 confirmed deaths. The storm caused eight weather-related fatalities in Louisiana and Tennessee. In Kentucky, a 72-year-old woman died from hypothermia, and an inmate passed away while clearing snow and ice at a correctional facility. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani reported that 10 individuals were discovered deceased on the streets of New York City.

Additionally, 14 U.S. states and the District of Columbia have declared a state of emergency due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall conditions.
