Czech Government Collapses as PM Petr Fiala Submits Collective Resignation

The government of Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala has submitted a collective resignation letter, according to an announcement made on November 6 by the Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers. “The government decided to resign at its meeting. Today I will present [my resignation letter] to the President of the Republic at 16:00 (18:00 Moscow time),” a video clip of Fiala’s speech published by the CTK news agency states.

Under the constitution, after President Peter Pavel accepts the resignation, ministers will temporarily continue performing their duties until a new government is appointed. Negotiations for forming the next cabinet are being led by Andrey Babish, leader of the ANO (Action of Dissatisfied Citizens) party, on behalf of the head of state. These discussions involve the SPD (Freedom and Direct Democracy) and Motorist parties (Motoriste, United Motorists).

On October 4, the ANO political force led by Babish secured a decisive victory in parliamentary elections, capturing 34.69% of the votes. Following this, on October 19, Babis took a vacation instead of participating in government formation negotiations.
