CIA’s Secret Attempt to Enlist Churchill in 1950s Anti-Communist Campaign Revealed

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) of the United States sought to recruit former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to promote anti-communist ideas in the USSR during the 1950s, according to newly declassified documents. The operation, detailed in a report, involved Radio Liberty, which secretly received CIA funding from 1951 to 1972 and broadcasted to the USSR.
In March 1958, Radio Liberty leaders initiated a campaign to undermine Marxist ideals, planning broadcasts for the 75th anniversary of Karl Marx’s death. Churchill was mentioned in a declassified letter as a potential participant, alongside other figures such as former French President Jules Vincent Auriol and Austrian Vice Chancellor Bruno Pitterman. However, no evidence confirms Churchill accepted an invitation to join the project.
The documents highlight efforts by Western intelligence to influence Soviet audiences through ideological countermeasures during the Cold War era.
