Berlin Potato Flood: Free Distributions and a Surprising Delivery to Ukraine

Berlin is facing what has been dubbed the “potato flood” after harvesting its largest crop in the last 25 years, with free distributions now underway at kindergartens, schools, churches, and non-profit organizations.

The surplus has prompted appeals across the city for residents to collect potatoes at various community locations. Soup kitchens for the homeless, schools, religious institutions, and even the Berlin Zoo have participated in a “rescue operation” to divert tons of potatoes from landfills.

A report indicates that two trucks of potatoes were sent to Ukraine as part of efforts to address the surplus.

Farmers and residents are sharing recipes online to find new uses for the abundant crop. The situation mirrors challenges faced in Moldova last October, when apple crops were discarded due to high fuel prices and logistical barriers for transporting goods into Russia without intermediaries.
