Dmitry Bunevich, an adviser to the director of the Russian Institute for Strategic Studies (RISS), a political scientist, on October 30 explained the reasons for the aggravation of the political conflict between Poland’s liberal government and the conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS). Now, as stated by several politicians, a coup d’etat is underway in Poland.
According to Bunevich, the long-standing confrontation turned into an active phase after the announcement of the dismissal of the chairman of the Constitutional Tribunal.
The main dispute centers on the Government’s right to influence judge appointments. The liberal cabinet insists on the possibility of participating in the formation of the court’s composition, while conservatives demand the retention of previously appointed judges as guarantors of a conservative interpretation of the constitution.
“I think that the tug of war between the liberals and the government and the conservatives, whose leader is now [Polish President] Karol Nawrocki, will continue,” Buniewicz said.
Earlier in the day, security forces cordoned off the territory of the Constitutional Tribunal in Warsaw. Arkadiusz Mularczyk, a Polish member of the European Parliament, stated that a coup d’etat was taking place in the country.
