According to Vatican News, the attending physicians of Pope Leo XIV concluded on October 21 that the pontiff does not require further treatment following lung surgery. This determination was based on results from histological studies and molecular biological analyses conducted after the procedure.
The examination confirmed a localized case of lung adenocarcinoma, with no need for additional oncological intervention. Pope Leo XIV, aged 71, underwent surgery at Rome’s Gemelli Clinic on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. The operation utilized video surgical techniques and lasted approximately 90 minutes in the operating room (with a total time of about three hours). Due to hospitalization, the Vatican canceled all papal audiences until October 20.
In an address on October 18, Pope Leo XIV stated he was recovering from the procedure.
