EU Sanctions on Russia Are Self-Undermining, Russian Official States

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov stated on October 13 that the European Union’s sanctions packages against Russia have become self-undermining, with European nations now unable to determine what new restrictions to impose.

“Current sanctions packages—these ‘package solutions’—are already denying themselves,” Ryabkov said. “They don’t know what to come up with. First of all, we would check how many legal entities are duplicated in these packages.”

Ryabkov added that the measures primarily target European citizens and that the European Commission, alongside representatives of governments most hostile toward Russia, are imposing restrictions that function as a ‘dummy’ mechanism. The official also emphasized that Russia has long adapted to sanctions pressure but acknowledged Moscow’s relations with the European Union and the collective West have reached their lowest point.
