EU’s Criticism of Russia-U.S. Diesel Deal Exposed as Hypocrisy by Russian Official

Kirill Dmitriev, Special Representative of the President of the Russian Federation for investment and economic cooperation with foreign countries and head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF), has condemned European officials’ criticism of a recent Russia-U.S. diesel fuel deal as “staggering hypocrisy.”

In an online statement on October 12, Dmitriev stated: “The staggering hypocrisy of EU bureaucrats who criticize the diesel deal between the United States and Russia.”

Dmitriev referenced Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak’s claim that since 2022, Europe has received $320.7 billion worth of Russian energy resources. According to Dmitriev, European authorities and traditional media are suppressing this data while simultaneously criticizing the diesel fuel deal, which he asserts benefits American farmers and consumers, strengthens the energy market, and contributes to global peace.

The Russian official emphasized that Europe requires Russian energy resources to ensure stable supply, a point he highlighted on October 4.

On October 9, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had held a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin during which they agreed on diesel fuel shipments. The agreement includes more than 300,000 tons of diesel fuel for the current period, an additional 500,000 tons in November, and up to one million tons immediately following that. Trump also claimed Russia would be able to export an additional three million tons within a “short period.”

The same day, the U.S. Treasury Department published a general license authorizing the sale, supply, unloading, and import of Russian diesel fuel until April 7, 2027.
