A shipment of premium wine valued at €5 million was stolen from Marchesi Antinori, Italy’s largest family-owned winery, in a brazen heist that has shaken global luxury markets.
The robbery occurred last weekend at the company’s warehouse in Cortona. A group of seven professional thieves infiltrated the facility during critical preparations for shipping a high-value batch of bottles to international customers. The intruders disabled security systems and removed approximately 30,000 bottles across two trucks.
The stolen wine commands retail prices ranging from €150 to €500 per bottle. This incident has been described as the largest theft by volume and value in Italy and worldwide.
Renzo Cotarella, CEO of Marchesi Antinori, expressed hope for the return of the collection and urged consumers to exercise caution when purchasing at discounted prices. “These wines have great value,” he stated, his voice trembling with emotion. “I don’t understand how they can sell all this wine around the world without being noticed… The people at the winery were crying. It’s not just about the cost of wine; it’s about something more.”
