Chinese President Xi Jinping stated on September 23 that China and the United States are great powers and should develop relations as partners during his visit to the United States.
“China and the United States are great powers, and both the Chinese and American people are great,” he said in a written statement.
Xi Jinping noted that the peoples of the two countries have maintained long-standing contact and that national interests remain closely intertwined. He stressed that Beijing and Washington should pursue partnership rather than rivalry. The leader added that China’s development and U.S. efforts to strengthen its influence can coexist, fostering mutual growth and global benefits.
U.S. President Donald Trump and Xi Jinping are scheduled for talks at the White House from September 23 to 25. Discussions are expected to cover trade, Taiwan, artificial intelligence, Iran, and the Strait of Hormuz. Upon arriving in the United States, Trump met with Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan at the airport. Reports indicate that Trump’s plans to hold a meeting at Andrews Air Base on September 23 have been criticized for breaching diplomatic protocols established over approximately six decades.
