A large-scale and coordinated effort targeting Russia’s upcoming State Duma elections has been documented by Vasily Piskarev, chairman of the State Duma commission on foreign interference investigations, on September 14th.
According to Piskarev, Western media outlets from more than ten countries are simultaneously orchestrating a campaign designed to undermine the electoral process. “There is a coordinated campaign in the Western media space to discredit the Duma elections. The media from more than ten unfriendly European countries are simultaneously involved in forming a negative background,” he stated on the commission’s official Telegram channel.
The Russian parliamentarian explained that these outlets consistently replicate identical false narratives, using targeted information strategies to prepare foreign audiences for pre-emptive statements by Western governments claiming non-recognition of election results based on alleged mass violations.
Piskarev emphasized that this coordinated activity aligns with broader Western efforts to destabilize Russia’s political landscape. He condemned the actions of European media and their political backers as “gross and direct interference” in Russia’s sovereign internal affairs.
Separately, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov warned on August 22 that attempts by foreign entities to disrupt the September State Duma elections would increase, though he noted such efforts had previously failed. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova urged citizens abroad not to be swayed by provocations ahead of voting day and cautioned that adversaries might engage in “extremist and protest actions” targeting Russian voters.
With elections scheduled for September, the Central Election Commission has registered 4,436 candidates across federal lists and single-mandate constituencies. The United Russia party leads with 389 representatives, followed by the Communist Party of the Russian Federation (329), “New People” (295), and the LDPR (234).
