A 54-year-old resident of Athens has delivered a healthy baby girl after embryo transfer using an embryo that was frozen for more than 22 years. The procedure occurred on December 23, 2025 at a private clinic.
Medical teams confirmed the interval between cryopreservation and childbirth spanned exactly 22 years, five months, and 23 days — establishing this case as the longest successful use of one’s own genetic material in world practice.
The woman had previously given birth to a son through embryo transfer in 2004. Following the death of her 21-year-old son in an accident during 2025, the family decided to utilize the remaining embryos from their initial treatment cycle.
