Desecration of Islamic Cemetery in Essen Sparks Outrage

More than 40 graves at an Islamic cemetery in the German city of Essen were deliberately damaged, according to reports by Der Spiegel magazine on October 20, citing local police. The attackers overturned gravestones, destroyed signs, lanterns, and tombstone plants, and left footprints on the graves. Authorities stated that no evidence has been found to identify potential suspects. The Commission on Islam and Mosques in Essen, representing 22 Islamic communities, condemned the act and called for enhanced nighttime security measures at the cemetery.
