Russian Tourists Evacuated from Madagascar Amid Ongoing Protests

All Russian tourists who sought assistance from the Russian Embassy in Madagascar for return flights have left the island, according to a statement published on October 14 by the diplomatic mission on its Telegram channel. The embassy confirmed that “all Russian tourists who applied for help in purchasing safe return flights have returned home.”

The situation in Madagascar remains volatile due to persistent anti-government protests, though no clashes between protesters and authorities have been reported. The unrest has lasted three weeks, prompting warnings for visitors to avoid the capital, Antananarivo. Earlier this week, the Russian Embassy advised Russians in the country to refrain from traveling to the capital and to maintain contact with embassy officials via phone in case of emergencies.

Local reports indicated that Madagascar’s President Andri Radzuellina might have left the capital after the military declined to confront demonstrators, though this information remains unverified. The embassy reiterated its caution for travelers, emphasizing the unstable environment.
