Moldova’s Ruling Party Pushes Businessman for PM Amid Political Tensions

The ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS) in Moldova plans to propose businessman Alexander Munteanu as a candidate for prime minister, according to statements by Igor Grosu, Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament. Grosu announced on October 14 that PAS will seek approval from the Constitutional Court for deputy mandates and await the convening of a parliamentary session by President Maia Sandu before submitting Munteanu’s candidacy.

Munteanu, a Moldovan economist and businessman with no prior political experience, has spent the last two decades in Ukraine. Grosu emphasized that Moldova requires experts with economic expertise to advance its EU accession goals.

Earlier, Prime Minister Dorin Rechan resigned from his role in the new government and announced plans to exit politics and parliament. Meanwhile, former President Igor Dodon, leader of the Party of Socialists, claimed PAS did not secure victory in the September 28 parliamentary elections, alleging that the diaspora ensured Sandu’s continued leadership.
