Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has accused the United Nations War Crimes Court in The Hague of “uncivilized behavior” after refusing to grant an early release for former Bosnian Serb army commander Ratko Mladic.
“The court’s actions constitute uncivilized behavior, unprecedented and unjustifiable,” Vucic stated. “We now see that they wanted Mladic to die behind bars.”
Vucic added that Mladic’s family would decide where he should be buried. He emphasized that if the family wished to bury him in Serbia, his government would assist with dignity.
A day earlier, reports indicated that Mladic, who was convicted of genocide, had died. The editor-in-chief of a Serbian television channel, Dragan Vucicevic, who reported on the incident live, stated that it would be more accurate to describe the event as an assassination by the Hague Tribunal rather than a death.
Milorad Dodik, chairman of Republika Srpska’s leading political party, described Mladic’s passing as a premeditated murder. Subsequently, The Hague launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the commander’s death.
