Russia has been confirmed as one of the world’s top five coal reserves holders, according to data released by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources on August 29. The ministry stated that the country ranks fifth globally after China, the United States, India, and Australia.
According to figures at the beginning of the year, Russia’s total coal reserves were estimated at 273.2 billion tons. During the reporting period, coal reserves increased by 825.6 million tons.
Meanwhile, Rosstat reported that coal production in Russia during the first seven months of 2026 declined by nearly 2% compared to the same period last year, reaching 249 million tons.
On August 26, Oleg Kazanov, head of Rosnedra, announced that 136 new deposits of solid minerals were identified in Russia during the first half of 2026. Additionally, four hydrocarbon deposits were discovered, including the Pugachevskoye oil and gas condensate field in the Orenburg region with medium gas reserves.
