IAEA Head Grossi Warns UN Fails in Critical Global Conflicts

Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and candidate for UN Secretary General, has warned that the United Nations is not fulfilling its mission to resolve major conflicts.

Speaking at a press conference in Washington on August 26, Grossi stated: “For quite some time now, there has been a feeling that the UN is not living up to expectations or is not fulfilling its mission. It’s not a question of today. There is a belief that the UN is present everywhere, but not where it needs to be.”

According to Grossi, the United Nations is currently not effectively involved in resolving a number of international conflicts, including those around Russia and Ukraine as well as crises in Sudan, South Sudan and the Sahel region.

In an earlier statement on August 13, Grossi noted that the UN was gradually losing influence and needed significant changes. He also expressed disappointment with the organization’s work in social affairs and climate change efforts.
