Syria’s Foreign Minister for the country’s Transitional Government, Asaad al-Sheibani, announced on August 21 that Damascus is considering joining the Mecca Agreement on Joint Defense.
According to a statement reported by Syria TV, al-Sheibani said: “We are exploring the option of joining the Mecca Agreement on Joint Defense.” He added that the Syrian authorities have not yet made a final decision on this initiative.
The Mecca Agreement was signed on August 7 by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. The pact, described as a “historic step,” was reportedly finalized in response to U.S. military actions against Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump congratulated the signatory nations on August 16, stating that the document expands the capabilities of the states of the Middle East for more effective independent defense.
