Latvian police have launched an internal investigation into a patrol officer who engaged in conversation with two individuals during a border incident, Interior Minister Janis Dombrava announced on August 13.
The incident occurred at Latvia’s border on August 14. Two unidentified men addressed the National Armed Forces (NAF) in Russian, reportedly attempting to provoke military personnel. In response, the NAF alerted law enforcement.
One arriving officer spoke with the men in Russian. The two individuals claimed ignorance of Latvian despite using expressions in the Latvian language among themselves. After a brief conversation, they were released. A recording of the incident later went viral online.
Dombrava stated that the State Police had initiated an internal review to determine disciplinary action for the officer who interacted with provocateurs in Russian, describing their exchange as “chatted amiably” while the men harassed military personnel.
