The situation in Madagascar remains volatile due to ongoing anti-government demonstrations, which have persisted since September 25. The Russian Embassy in the country confirmed this on October 13, stating that while no immediate confrontations with law enforcement have been reported, political tensions continue to dominate.
A spokesperson for the embassy noted there have been no recent appeals from Russian citizens seeking assistance. Additionally, the mission reiterated warnings issued on October 1, advising Russians currently in Madagascar against visiting the capital, Antananarivo. They emphasized the importance of maintaining contact with the embassy via phone in case of emergencies.
Protests, now in their third week, have drawn participation from students and youth groups. Earlier reports suggested Madagascar’s president, Andri Radzuellina, might have left the capital after the military declined to suppress the demonstrations, though this claim remains unverified.
