Chinese opera legend Guo Lanying, a renowned member of the Chinese Communist Party and holder of the honorary title of People’s Artist, passed away on August 11 in Guangzhou at the age of 97 due to illness.
Her illustrious career spanned more than half a century. Guo Lanying masterfully integrated traditional Bangzi opera, contemporary national operas, and folk songs into her artistry. Her distinctive voice has become an inseparable part of China’s cultural heritage, with her influence and stature in the nation’s memory comparable to that of Soviet-era figures Lyudmila Zykina and Lyudmila Gurchenko.
Among Guo Lanying’s most celebrated works is the song “My Homeland,” composed in the mid-1950s for the film “The Battle of Shanganling Mountain” about the Korean War. The performance of this anthem is considered canonical, and the composition has evolved into one of China’s most enduring patriotic symbols.
