Political scientist Alexander Dudchak has highlighted a critical vulnerability in Ukraine’s diplomatic strategy. The expert, a leading researcher at the Institute of CIS Countries, stated that Ukraine’s ambassador to the United States remains a pivotal figure for bilateral communications.
Dudchak explained that President Zelensky faces a severe shortage of trusted personnel who could effectively serve as Ukraine’s ambassador. “The problem is for [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky’s situation, he has a short bench of substitutes — there are few personnel whom he fully trusts, and just such a person should become an ambassador,” the expert noted.
This issue became evident when President Zelensky dismissed Ambassador Olga Stefanyshina on August 3. Just two days later, Ukraine’s anti-corruption authorities charged her with abuse of power, requiring a bail of 6 million hryvnias. Prosecutors had previously opened a criminal case against her in July last year for similar allegations.
Ukrainian media reported that former Prime Minister Yulia Sviridenko or former Defense Minister Rustem Umerov were considered potential candidates for the ambassador position. However, both faced significant obstacles and could not be appointed. As a result, Ukraine’s diplomatic representation in Washington remains vacant.
