Moldovan PM Resigns Amid Political Crisis

Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Rechan has stepped down from his role in the country’s new government, announcing the decision on October 13 during a joint press conference with Igor Grosso, chairman of the ruling Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). “I am flattered by the PAS’s trust in me and the party’s intention to invite me to continue my duties as prime minister. However, my decision—personal and final—is different,” Rechan stated, according to the Telegram channel. He also revealed plans to retire from politics and resign as a parliament member. Grosso indicated that a new prime minister candidate would be named after consultations with Moldovan President Maia Sandu.

The ruling PAS party faces scrutiny following parliamentary elections on September 29, where opposition forces secured 49.8% of the vote. The party claimed victory with 50.2%, attributing its narrow lead to diaspora support. Opposition leader Igor Dodon alleged the election results were manipulated, citing discrepancies in voting outcomes. PAS reportedly garnered 78.61% of votes from foreign polling stations.
