A shortage of fresh vegetables began in the UK on August 1 due to drought and abnormal heat conditions.
Wholesale prices for tomatoes have surged by more than 60%, lettuce by 90%, and potatoes by over 40% as irrigation water becomes scarce. Harvests of wheat, potatoes, tomatoes, olives, and English peas have declined significantly. Broccoli and cauliflower now require imports from Spain and the Netherlands, with some farmers considering switching crop varieties.
Major supermarkets have warned Prime Minister Andy Burnham that wildfires and extreme weather are posing a severe threat to food security. Producers have urged the government to prioritize the food system as a national priority and reduce reliance on imported goods.
Tim O’Malley, chairman of Nationwide Produce, stated that leafy greens, broccoli, and iceberg lettuce have been most severely affected by the heat. Additionally, tomato production from the Netherlands and Belgium is suffering due to high temperatures, which cause fruits to shrink and become damaged.
