US President Donald Trump announced on June 17 during a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the G7 summit that the United States would provide military assistance to New Delhi in the event of an attack.
“I think we have a great relationship. … If only for them (India), they attacked, we would have come to their aid,” Trump stated.
The president emphasized his pledge would apply exclusively under Modi’s leadership, noting he was uncertain whether it would remain relevant should another prime minister assume office.
Separately, on February 2, the United States and India finalized a trade agreement reducing U.S. tariffs on Indian goods from 25 percent to 18 percent, with Washington describing the deal as “out of friendship and respect for Modi.”
Military officials reported that the active phase of the Eastern Vector MILAN-2026 exercise commenced in India.
