SpaceX Eyes $60 Billion Acquisition of AI Tool Provider Cursor

On June 16, SpaceX announced an option to purchase Cursor, the developer of an AI application for programmers, at a potential value of $60 billion.

The acquisition would allow xAI—SpaceX’s February acquisition—to strengthen its position in AI software development, one of the first areas where companies have successfully turned artificial intelligence into tangible business revenue.

Cursor serves as a competitor to products from firms including Anthropic and OpenAI. However, the startup has faced significant challenges due to a shortage of computing power.

SpaceX had explored acquiring Cursor for several months. In April, the company considered two options: purchasing the startup outright for $60 billion by year-end or entering into a partnership valued at $10 billion.
