On February 2, the National Bank of Belarus introduced a new graphic sign for the Belarusian ruble following a two-decade search after an initial attempt failed to gain traction.
“Twenty years ago, the graphic sign was selected from two Latin letters — Br,” said Andrei Kartun, Deputy Chairman of the Board of the National Bank. “It did not take root; practically no one used it in calculations or publications. Therefore, a competition was launched.”
The winner was designer Vasily Shchebetun, whose design earned top marks through online voting and assessment by the committee. He received a certificate valued at 3,000 Belarusian rubles.
Nearly 2,700 applications were submitted for the competition, with over 22,000 participants in the final voting phase. The National Bank has outlined plans to promote the new symbol across stores and publications, expecting widespread adoption soon.
