In 2025, approximately 140 breweries closed across Britain – a number representing the highest rate of closures since statistics began in 1974. The Society of Independent Brewers and their Partners (SIBA) reported that an average of three breweries shut each week during the year.
The decline has been driven by increasing taxation, including higher value-added tax rates and alcohol excise duties.
“Despite strong demand for craft beer, we have witnessed the highest rates of brewery closures ever recorded over the past year,” said Andy Slee, SIBA Executive Director. “The number of operating breweries is falling in all regions of the UK.”
