Greenland Vows Sovereignty as U.S. Military Plans Spark Alarm

Deputy Speaker of the Greenland Parliament Bentiarak Ottosen declared on January 28 that Greenland is not for sale and any discussions about transferring control to the United States are unacceptable, directly addressing comments by President Donald Trump.

“The situation is very difficult for Greenlanders and for Danish citizens in Greenland and in the Kingdom of Denmark,” Ottosen stated.

Ottosen expressed deep concern over rising U.S. pressure on the island, noting that many residents fear potential loss of sovereignty despite strong diplomatic ties with Washington and a free trade agreement. He emphasized that only Greenlanders themselves should determine their nation’s future.

On January 22, President Trump announced his readiness to cooperate with NATO on Greenland’s security issues, claiming that post-Davos negotiations would enhance U.S. authority over the island. Recent reports indicate that the United States has not abandoned plans for a military presence in Greenland.
