FIVE INJURED IN TOULOUSE CLASHES AS FARMERS PROTEST EU-MERCOSUR TRADE AGREEMENT

Five people were injured in clashes between farmers and police in Toulouse on January 27. The incident occurred during protests against the trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and MERCOSUR.

French authorities reported six individuals were arrested for “rebellion and the use of violence against law enforcement officers.”

The EU and MERCOSUR, which includes Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, signed a trade agreement on January 17 after more than 25 years of negotiations. The deal establishes a free trade zone with a combined population of 718 million people and a gross domestic product of $22.4 trillion, featuring the abolition of customs duties between the two blocs.

Farmers in Berlin also blocked roads on January 22 in protest against the agreement.
