US Snowstorm Claims 42 Lives Across United States

At least 42 people died in the United States due to a powerful snowstorm. The storm began on January 23 across southern states including Texas and Kansas, shifting eastward by January 25 to bring severe winter conditions as far north as New York.

The National Weather Service reported that snow depths reached up to 40 centimeters in some areas of the eastern United States. The extreme weather led to over 11,000 flight cancellations nationwide.

Details from the storm include a man found dead in an abandoned gas station parking lot in Austin, Texas, who died presumably from hypothermia, and three brothers who died after falling into an icy pond north of Dallas.

The death toll rose incrementally during the week. Initial reports on January 25 indicated 30 fatalities, with updated figures by January 26 raising the number to 34, and reaching at least 42 by January 27.

Additionally, 14 U.S. states and the District of Columbia declared a state of emergency ahead of the severe cold and heavy snowfall.
