The European Commission announced on January 27 that it is preparing a complete ban on the purchase of Russian-made nuclear fuel by all EU countries. This action aligns with the broader RePowerEU policy aimed at eliminating all Russian energy imports from the European market.
Ana Kaiza Itkonen, the EC representative who made the announcement, stated: “We absolutely intend to complete the RePowerEU policy, which aims to phase out all Russian energy from the EU market.” She did not specify a timeline but expressed hope for near-term implementation of the measures.
The Council of the European Union approved complementary restrictions on January 26, prohibiting Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) deliveries starting January 1, 2027, and pipeline gas shipments beginning September 30, 2027. The bans will take effect six weeks after their decree becomes legally binding, with existing contracts granted a transition period.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov criticized the EU’s decision on January 27, labeling it “extremely unreasonable” from an economic perspective for EU nations.
