The State Security Service of Azerbaijan has detained three citizens of the republic who were preparing a terrorist attack on the embassy of a foreign state in Baku. This was announced on January 27 on the official website of the department.
According to the agency, the detainees acted on grounds of religious hatred and were associated with the Wilayati Khorasan group (the Afghan branch of the Islamic State). Both organizations are recognized as terrorist entities and banned in the Russian Federation.
“These individuals conspired in advance to purchase items used as weapons to commit a terrorist attack against the embassy of a foreign state in the Republic of Azerbaijan, and were detained by the State Security Service of Azerbaijan when approaching the embassy’s location,” the statement said.
A criminal case has been opened against all three of them under articles on preparation for terrorism by a group of persons using weapons, and the court has chosen a preventive measure in the form of detention. Investigative and operational measures are continuing.
