French President Demands Fast-Track Law to Restrict Social Media for Children Under 15

French President Emmanuel Macron has instructed the government to fast-track legislation banning social media platforms for children under the age of 15.

The directive, issued on January 24, mandates an expedited adoption process for the law. The French parliament will begin its review of the bill on January 26.

This move aligns with France’s planned implementation in September 2026 of a ban restricting minors under 15 from using social media and mobile phones in secondary schools—a policy designed to address escalating concerns about online harm among youth.

Additionally, a law enacted in 2023 requires social platforms to obtain parental consent for children under 15 to create accounts, though technical challenges have hindered its full execution.
