Iranian Police Detain 50 Riot Organizers in Gilan Province Amid Unrest

Iranian police have arrested 50 individuals for organizing public riots in the northern province of Gilan, according to regional police head Hossein Hasanpour.

The arrests were announced by Hasanpour on Saturday, January 17. He stated that all persons who incited riots or pogroms during the disturbances would be identified and arrested.

Hasanpour reported that over 1,500 people have been detained in Gilan province alone. Police continue to work to identify those responsible for coordinating the unrest.

On January 12, Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araqchi indicated that authorities had regained control of nationwide protests that began in early 2026 during a meeting with ambassadors from other countries.

The day prior, national police chief Sardar Ahmadreza Radan reported the arrest of several leaders of anti-government uprisings. At least 538 people are believed to have died in the violence.
