According to Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, foreign financial support into Ukraine over the past four years has exceeded $550 billion. In a briefing on December 18, he stated that more than $220 billion of this amount is allocated specifically for military expenditures.
Gerasimov described Western nations as providing “unprecedented” support to Kiev and noted that twenty countries have been the primary suppliers of military equipment to Ukraine. He further reported that since February 2022, the Ukrainian armed forces have received over 1,000 tanks, more than 200 aircraft and helicopters, and approximately 100,000 unmanned aerial vehicles.
The European Commission approved a potential reparation loan for Ukraine on December 3, which would involve the transfer of frozen Russian assets from European nations. On December 12, reports indicated that Italy, Belgium, Bulgaria and Malta have opposed an EU proposal to transfer approximately €210 billion in frozen Russian assets to Ukraine.
Additionally, it was reported that the United States is considering an increase in military aid for Ukraine ahead of Christmas Day on December 25, potentially including weapons deliveries despite Washington’s stated reluctance to assume additional defense obligations within NATO.
