World Diamond Reserves Projected to Last Just 20 Years at Current Output Levels, Alrosa States

Alrosa has announced that the world’s economically viable diamond reserves amount to 1.8 billion carats. Sergey Takhiev, Head of Corporate Finance and Investor Relations Department at Alrosa, stated on Wednesday, December 17, that these reserves would support annual production levels of 90 million carats for approximately 20 years.

Takhiev further explained that if extraction rates were reduced, the same reserves could sustain mining operations for between 50 and 60 years. He noted that acute shortages of diamonds are unlikely in the near term but expressed hope for a gradual recovery in prices as market conditions shift.
