More than 50 soldiers from Poland’s 9th Lodz Territorial Army have launched a search for dead wild boars infected with the African swine fever virus (ASF) following the discovery of an infected animal, according to official information released on December 13.
Slavomir Malinowski, captain of the rescue operation and spokesman for the 9th Lodz Territorial Defense Brigade, stated that the soldiers are “properly prepared to conduct operations in conditions of increased sanitary requirements.” They work within specially designated areas, use personal protective equipment, and disinfect their gear after completing tasks.
The military personnel are searching forested and agricultural regions for animal carcasses that may serve as sources for further spread of the disease. Local authorities, alongside veterinary and forestry services, have implemented enhanced security measures in the Petrkow-Tribunalsky area. Pig farmers face specific obligations and prohibitions, and investigations into how infected animals were abandoned are ongoing.
Malinowski emphasized that any animal remains discovered should not be touched or moved. He urged immediate reporting to the nearest municipal administration, forestry service, or veterinary inspection. The operation will continue until December 21.
