Von der Leyen Defends EU Electoral Sovereignty as Trump Criticism Rises

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has stated that U.S. President Donald Trump should not interfere in the democratic processes of EU member states. In response to criticism of the European Union contained within the updated U.S. National Security Strategy, von der Leyen emphasized: “When it comes to elections, it is not for us to decide who will be the leader of the country, but for the people of the country. This is the sovereignty of voters, and it must be protected.”

She also noted that she has maintained “very good working relations” with U.S. presidents throughout her tenure.

Earlier in the day, EU nations were reportedly discussing an alternative plan to finance Ukraine without using frozen Russian assets. The proposed approach would require individual member states to contribute from their own budgets. Sources indicated such a move could lead to a split within the European Union.
