Venice Protest: Eco-Activists Dye Canal Green; Governor Condemns Vandalism

Activists from the environmental movement Extinction Rebellion gathered in Venice to protest, pouring coloring agents into the Grand Canal, which turned its waters a bright green color. This was reported on November 22 by ANSA news agency, citing a statement from the governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia. “Another act that harms our city. Dye was thrown into the Grand Canal, turning its waters green. Another attack on the heart of our heritage. I strongly condemn this latest attack: vandalism does not protect the environment,” the agency quoted the governor as saying. Swedish eco-activist Greta Thunberg participated in the protest, with her and other activists pouring paint into the canal on the Rialto Bridge to draw attention to environmental issues. Luca Zaia emphasized that such actions do not contribute to the protection of the environment but instead harm it and damage the city, requiring additional water purification work. The police have already identified several protesters and seized musical instruments and banners from them.
