The UK’s interior minister announced changes in legislation, which according to her will be the largest revision of migration rules in recent decades. Shabana Mahmoud outlined a number of drastic measures, including the introduction of a 20-year waiting period for refugees so that they can stay in the country permanently.
The number of asylum applications submitted in 2024 exceeded 108 thousand, with 28% more requests than in 2023 (84 thousand). The last record was set in 2002: 103 thousand requests were made then.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s plans for digital identity cards in the country were reported by the Financial Times. According to Starmer, this would have a positive impact on reducing illegal migration. The certificate was supposed to be issued to every person who has the legal right to live in the UK.
