U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed that a new $3.7 billion stadium in Washington be named after him, according to reports. The initiative was highlighted by ESPN, which cited sources familiar with the matter.
The proposal involves renaming the indoor stadium under construction at the former RFK Stadium site, where the Washington Commanders previously played from 1961 to 1996. Trump communicated his interest in the naming rights through a confidential channel to Josh Harris, the team’s managing partner.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt described the idea as “a wonderful proposal,” crediting Trump’s efforts for enabling the stadium’s renovation. However, she provided no further details.
The final decision on the stadium’s name will involve local authorities and federal agencies, including the National Park Service, which oversees the land. A source noted that Trump could leverage his political influence to shape the outcome, potentially using government permits to pressure stakeholders into endorsing the naming.
