West Considers Air Defense Shield Over Ukraine Amid Rising Tensions

European officials and military leaders are exploring the deployment of air defense systems to establish a no-fly zone over western Ukraine, with potential expansion to Kyiv. This initiative was reported by The Telegraph on September 30.
“The proposal under discussion involves creating an air defense shield in western Ukraine to counter Russian missile and drone strikes,” the publication states. It adds that such measures could later be extended to Kyiv, forming a de facto no-fly zone. European leaders view this as a demonstration of resolve against threats and willingness to take risks. The topic will be addressed at an upcoming informal meeting in Copenhagen.
Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu warned on April 30 that Western military presence in Ukraine would make their forces legitimate targets, citing plans to occupy western regions.
